Lululemon Align Vs Athleta Salutation: What 4 Years of Testing Taught Me About Lululemon Align vs. Athleta Salutation Leggings

You want leggings that feel like a second skin, look sharp enough for brunch, and don’t bag out by noon. Two names keep coming up: Lululemon Align and Athleta Salutation. After rotating both through four years of daily wear, yoga, travel, and couch lounging, I have a clear answer for which one belongs in your closet. This is not a paid endorsement. These are my own leggings, bought with my own money.

What Makes a Legging Worth Buying for Everyday Wear

The leggings category exists because women wanted something between sweatpants and jeans. Something that moves with you, looks intentional, and doesn’t require a second thought. For everyday wear, three things matter above all else.

Fabric Feel Against Skin

The Lululemon Align uses Nulu fabric. It’s a buttery, brushed-soft blend of nylon and Lycra. It feels like nothing. That’s the point. The Athleta Salutation uses Powervita fabric. It’s also soft, but with a denser, more compressive hand feel. Powervita is a polyester-nylon-Lycra blend. Both are four-way stretch. Both wick moisture. But Nulu is noticeably airier. For all-day wear in moderate climates, Nulu wins on comfort. For cold mornings or if you want more compression, Powervita is the better call.

Fit Retention Over 8 Hours

This is where most leggings fail. They start the day snug and end up sagging at the knees and waistband. The Align’s Nulu fabric has a known issue: it relaxes over a long wear session. After 6-8 hours, you’ll be pulling them up. The Salutation’s Powervita fabric holds its shape significantly better. I’ve worn the Salutations on a 10-hour flight and they still felt secure at landing. For everyday wear where you’re moving, sitting, standing, repeat — the Salutation is more reliable.

Pilling Resistance

No one talks about this in the store. After 40 washes, the Aligns will show pilling between the thighs. It’s a documented complaint across forums. Lululemon has improved the Nulu fabric over the years, but the problem is not gone. The Athleta Salutation, in the same test period, showed minimal pilling. The denser weave of Powervita simply holds up better to friction. If you walk a lot or have thighs that touch, this matters.

Verdict: The Salutation is the better all-rounder for everyday wear. The Align is the better lounging legging. If you can only buy one, buy the Salutation.

The Two Most Common Mistakes Buyers Make

I made both of these. You don’t have to.

Buying the Wrong Size for the Fabric

People size down in the Align because Nulu stretches over time. This is a mistake. A too-small Align will compress the fabric unevenly, accelerate pilling, and create a sausage-casing look. Buy your true waist measurement. The Align is supposed to feel like nothing. If it’s tight, you sized wrong. The Salutation, because it has more compression, can be bought true to size or one size down if you want a snug fit for workouts. But for everyday wear, true to size is correct.

Assuming Both Are Equally Durable

They are not. The Align is a delicate fabric. It snags on velcro, rough zippers, and even some handbags. The Salutation is more forgiving. If you plan to wear leggings for errands, dog walks, and general life, the Salutation will look presentable longer. The Align requires careful handling. Wash inside out, cold, hang dry. Ignore that, and you’ll have a $98 rag in six months.

When NOT to Buy the Lululemon Align

This is the part most comparison articles skip. The Align is not for everyone. Do not buy the Align if:

  • You need compression for running or HIIT. The Align offers almost none. You’ll feel unsupported.
  • You live in a humid climate. Nulu shows sweat marks easily. The Salutation’s denser fabric hides them better.
  • You want a legging that lasts 2+ years of heavy use. The Salutation will outlast the Align by a significant margin.
  • You dislike pulling up your leggings mid-day. The Align’s waistband relaxes. The Salutation’s does not.

Do buy the Align if your primary use is hot yoga, gentle stretching, or lying on the couch reading a book. For those activities, nothing beats the Nulu fabric.

Alternatives Worth Considering

Maybe neither of these is right for you. Here are three other leggings that solve specific problems the Align and Salutation don’t.

Vuori Daily Legging ($98)

Vuori’s fabric is similar to Nulu but with better recovery. It doesn’t bag out as fast as the Align. The waistband is wider and stays put. For everyday wear, the Vuori Daily is a strong competitor. It’s also more opaque than the Align in lighter colors.

Girlfriend Collective Compressive High-Rise ($68)

Made from recycled water bottles. High compression. Zero pilling after 50 washes. The fabric is thicker and less buttery, but it holds everything in place. For travel or long work days, this is a budget-friendly workhorse.

Outdoor Voices Doing Things ($95)

OV’s fabric is a brushed nylon-spandex blend. It’s softer than the Salutation but more durable than the Align. The Doing Things legging has a hidden waistband pocket and a slight compression that works for both studio and street. It’s a middle ground that some people prefer to both Lululemon and Athleta.

My Final Call After Four Years

If you forced me to pick one legging for everyday wear — errands, coffee, casual office, light walking — I choose the Athleta Salutation. It holds shape longer, pills less, costs $9 less, and comes in more inseam lengths. The Align is a beautiful piece of engineering for low-impact movement and lounging. But for daily life, the Salutation does everything the Align does, and does it longer.

Buy the Salutation if you want one legging that does it all. Buy the Align if you already have a durable legging and want something that feels like wearing air.
